![]() ![]() It’s a place to go for chicken fried steak with country gravy, chicken pot pie, and pork cutlets with cinnamon apples. With food fit for a hungry bear defining the cuisine.īlack Bear Diner is a fun experience, built around solid American cooking. And middle scale as well - with restaurants like Denny’s and IHOP rushing their chow from the kitchen to tables under both the sun and the stars.Īnd, with much success, the popular Black Bear Diner on Ventura Boulevard in Tarzana - where one recent Sunday the wait was worthy of a hunter, crouching down to watch for bear. These days, there are restaurants, both upscale and downscale, that have embraced the phenomenon of dining on the street. And then, to entire city streets, blocked off to traffic or at least to parking, in outdoor dining cabanas - the construction of which kept lots of carpenters well employed. That grew into larger malls, where more upscale restaurants served meals on already existing outdoor patios. I didn't want to go back and wait another 10 minutes for them to fix their mistake. At first, the outdoor dining phenomenon began in mini-malls, where casual takeout restaurants began serving food - often in Styrofoam - to a handful of diners seated at a smattering of tables with a view of the parking lot. I checked my wife's order and it was missing an item I told them I wanted. Then the cashier didn't know how to ring up the order with a coupon I had (told her about the coupon when ordering). When I arrived, they told me the cheese I ordered wasn't available, so I had to wait for them to take it back and put another choice of cheese on it. She didn't understand what I wanted, and had to get someone to help her place the order as she didn't know what to do. I wanted 2 burgers w/o certain items they put on. The lady who answered disconnected me twice, and I was able to give her my order the 3rd time. I tried to order vis their website, but couldn't order two different things with some specific instructions. My last visit was a carry out order and it was a mini-disaster. ![]() The food was good, but Waitress appeared to have too many tables to service My 2nd visit was a weekday, just after opening and I was greeted/seated promptly and everything worked great. The 1st time me and my wife waited almost 15 minutes to get seated, even thou it was not crowded. I've been here 3 times in the past 60 days, 2 were not good and 1 was excellent. The display case near the entrance was full of tempting desserts, but we didn’t have any room. The potatoes and steak were topped with a cream gravy which was good, but not as flavorful as the brown gravy. The chicken fried steak was about 1/2 the normal size but again, it was all she needed. My wife ordered the small chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and green beans. My wife and I both really liked the brown gravy on the mashed potatoes. The pot roast was fork tender and had some pieces of celery, onion and carrots. I ordered the pot roast that was served with mashed red potatoes with skins and green beans. My wife and I ordered two of their “little less” entrees that were the perfect size meal for us as we were traveling and couldn’t take any leftovers with us. We dropped in for an early dinner on a Friday around 5:30pm, and were surprised that there was already. We had previously eaten at a Black Bear Diner in a different city, so we knew to expect the whimsical bear decorations and large food portions.
